BRUDNYI LECTURE SERIES

Aron Abramovich Brudnyi (1932-2011)

Aron Abramovich was a psychologist, researcher, professor and father.  He knew the importance of teamwork, and believed that when people collaborate they can create something greater than themselves.  In 1998 he left his comfortable position at the Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University to head the psychology laboratory at the newly formed American University of Kyrgyzstan.  In his 13 years at AUK (AUCA after 2002), he provided immeasurable leadership and council to a young faculty and a young university.

Aron Abramovich worked at the Academy of Sciences for 52 years, including stints at Moscow State University.  He led the Psychology Department of the Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University, as well as at AUCA.  During this time he produced over 300 scientific papers, receiving the National Award of the Kyrgyz Republic in the field of science and technology in 1996.  His research was published in 7 languages and reprinted several times, focusing on educational psychology and the psychology of learning.

Aaron Abramovich was a Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences, a Member of Russian Academy of Natural Sciences and Professor Emeritus at the California Academy of Education, and the Academy of Pedagogical and Social Sciences.

Psychology was not Professor Brudny's only love.  He loved science fiction and wrote short stories and screenplays.  His play "Seance" was staged in Moscow, and one of his screenplays was adapted to the Swiss film "Mirror of Shadows."  His work used existential prose, and showed great curiosity in the human spirit.

Professor Brudnyi was a live soul.  His presence lifted others up, and he was able to effect them in a way that few people are able.  He was a dedicated father and patriot.  He raised two sons Ismail and Erkin with his late wife, Dinara, and after the fall of the Soviet Union dedicated much of his time to his new country, publishing multiple articles promoting social cohesion and development of a democratic political process in Kyrgyzstan.

Aron Abramovich Brudnyi Master Lecturer Series

The American University of Central Asia is proud to announce the creation of the Aron Abramovich Brudnyi Master Lecturer Series.  Professor Brudnyi made contacts all over the world, and used them to bring expertise and international experience to AUCA.  He was generous not only with his psychology students, but also sought to enrich the lives of all undergraduate students.

AUCA is honoring the legacy of Professor Brudny through the establishment of an endowment for the Aaron Abramovich Brudnyi Master Lecturer Series.  The endowment will allow the AUCA Psychology Department to annually invite a world-renowned researcher to Bishkek to team up with faculty and students of all disciplines.  The invitees will visit for 1-2 weeks, and will present research, give public lectures, and provide private counsel to students and faculty.  The results will be more professional output from AUCA research centers, wider exposure of AUCA students to world-class thinkers, and opportunities for invitees to discover the uniqueness of AUCA and Kyrgyzstan.

We were pleased to host Professor Brudnyi’s friend and colleague, Professor Akon Pogosovich Nazaretyan, as the inaugural speaker.  Professor Nazaretyan teaches at Moscow State University, and is the chief editor of the journal “Historical Psychology and Sociological History.”  Professor Nazaretyan’s inaugural Brudnyi Lecture was given on April 2nd, 2011, at AUCA.  48 people from the Bishkek community attended and were treated to a lecture and discussion on “Big History.”  Professor Nazaretyan stayed throughout the week, working with AUCA students on issues close to Professor Brudnyi’s heart: social violence and social stereotypes and prejudices.

Professor Brudnyi devoted his career to his students and his research.  AUCA is dedicated to instilling Professor Brudnyi’s commitment in all its faculty and students.  We are currently working to endow the Brudnyi Master Lecture Series, and ensure future collaboration for the next generation of students who were not fortunate enough to know Professor Brudny.  All inquiries regarding the endowment can be sent to Sven Stafford, AUCA director of development, at stafford_s@mail.auca.kg.
