Seminar at CASI: Kyrgyzstan and Europe: A Relationship Built on Securing Development? 3 May 2012 On 23 May 2012 CASI will host a seminar “Kyrgyzstan and Europe: A Relationship Built on Securing Development?” organized by the Europe-Central Asia Monitoring programme (EUCAM) of FRIDE (Brussels/Madrid) and the Karelian Institute (Joensuu, Finland) CASI Awards Three Research Grants to Faculty 27 April 2012 The Central Asian Studies Institute has completed the review of proposals for the research grants, and is happy to announce that the following three projects were approved for funding: Research seminar: Memories of perestroika in Kyrgyzstan and Central Asia 23 April 2012 On 27 April 2012 the Central Asian Studies Institute will host a research seminar on Memories of perestroika in Kyrgyzstan and Central Asia. Dr. Irina Morozova, Dr. Gulnara Aitpaeva and Ainura Turgangazieva will share the initial findings of the field research that investigated the ways how perestroika times and the fall of socialism are remembered and discussed among various social groups in contemporary Kyrgyzstan. 29 March 2012 The Central Asian Studies Institute is calling for paper and panel proposals for its second annual conference to be held on September 28-29, 2012. The first annual conference of CASI in 2011 initiated discussion on the state of scholarship on and in Central Asia. The second conference continues a discourse on how we make sense of the region by taking the alleged boundary between “formal” and “informal” Central Asia as a starting point. As the terms themselves are being hotly debated elsewhere, this conference firstly encourages scholars to look at the nature, scale and legitimacy of such a binary division. 12 March 2012 On 23 March 2012 CASI will host a talk by Dr. Tim Epkenhans, professor of Islamic and Iranian Studies at the Albert-Ludwigs-University in Freiburg. The talk titled "Commanding Right and Forbidding Wrong? Islamic Elites, Business and the State in Tajikistan" will start at 16:00 at AUCA (Room 315). Interpreting the Soviet Cultural Legacy in Central Asia, academic workshop hosted by CASI 12 March 2012 On 6-7 March 2012 the Central Asian Studies Institute of AUCA hosted an international academic workshop titled “Interpreting the Soviet Cultural Legacy in Central Asia”. The event gathered 15 scholars and researchers representing some leading research centers and universities of Central Asia, Russia, Europe and the United States for a discussion organized around five themes (see agenda). Academic Workshop "Interpreting the Soviet Cultural Legacy in Central Asia": Agenda Released 1 March 2012 On 6-7 March 2012, the Central Asian Studies Institute at the American University of Central Asia will host an academic workshop entitled “Interpreting the Soviet Cultural Legacy in Central Asia”. The workshop will feature scholars representing Central Asian, Russian, European and US universities and research institutes.? Click below to access agenda and other details. Call for Proposals: CASI Research Grants for AUCA Faculty Members 8 February 2012 The Central Asian Studies Institute of AUCA is calling for research grant applications under its Central Asia Research Initiative. This program is intended to support original research that will generate new empirical knowledge and contribute to a better understanding of Central Asia. In this round CASI will consider projects with the budget up to 10,000 USD each. The proposals will be evaluated by a special board consisting of the members of the CASI International Advisory Board. Deadline for applications is March 5, 2012. Round Table on Partnership Between Parliament and Policy Centers 7 February 2012 On 31 January 2012 CASI co-hosted with the Tian Shan Policy Center a public event titled "Forging Partnership with Kyrgyzstan's New Lawmakers: How Research and Policy Centers Can Help Improve Governance?" The round table, attended by parliament members and representatives of policy research institutes, discussed the status quo and prospects for productive cooperation between various governing agencies and policy centers in Kyrgyzstan.
