COURSES
GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
- Students need to earn 6 credits of Arts and Sports courses (not CULT courses) required for graduation. The CULT courses may count towards 6 credits of Humanities electives within General Education requirement, but not toward 6 credits in Arts and Sports. The CULT courses are offered for regular grades. The rest Arts and Recreation Sports program courses are graded PASS or NO PASS.
- A courses “Western Art of 17-18 centuries” and “Comparative Study of American and European Art of the 19-20 centuries” may be counted towards 3 credits in courses focusing on the USA or Western countries.
- An additional fee is charged for individualized music instruction (1 credit music courses).
ART 125 Treasures of the World Culture I 3 credits The course is for those who want to understand art, its origin and development. The course offers an opportunity to get acquainted with ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. Ancient culture, outstanding people, and searching for treasures and civilizations teach students to analyze and appreciate works of art and help them to become a people belonging to the world. Art is endless and it doesn’t need an interpreter.
ART 227 Treasures of the World Culture II 3 credits Prerequisite: ART 125 This course continues the travel through time and gives students a chance to compare the Middle Ages of Japan and Europe and to become acquainted with the Renaissance. Gothic cathedrals, the poetry of chivalry, masterpieces of Dante and Leonardo, François Villon and Bruegel will not leave students indifferent. The films shown in class help students understand and appreciate the events.
ART 229 Treasures of the World Culture III 3 credits Prerequisite: ART 227 Treasures of the World Culture III is devoted to the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The class looks at France, listens to Bach and Mozart, gets acquainted with Voltaire, and defines the differences between romanticism and classicism, between rococo and the baroque. Students learn about Van Gogh, Beardsley and other famous people. Students listen to music performed in class and see of films illustrating the era, its people and their creative activities.
ART 126 Stories of the Masterpieces I ART 228 Stories of the Masterpieces II 3 credits This course examines music, paintings, architecture and literature that reflect life and serve as sources of pleasure that help us to know the universe. The objective of the course is to get acquainted with brilliant masterpieces, to know their history, to expand students’ outlook, and to help students to know themselves.
ART 124 Kyrgyz Film and Its Place in the History of World Cinematography 1 3 credits This course acquaints students with Kyrgyz film history from the beginning until the formation of the national school of Kyrgyz cinema masters. The class is accompanied by film watching.
ART 230 Kyrgyz Film and Its Place in the History of World Cinematography 2 3 credits Prerequisite: ART 124 This course is the continuation of the KYRGYZFILM-1, and covers the period from the “New Wave” through the present. This historical excursion from contemporary films to Kyrgyz films classic allows students to see the Kyrgyz cinematographic miracle clearly.
ART 113 Drama Art 3 credits While taking this course students have the opportunity to learn to realize themselves in public. Students are taught to articulate properly, to move on stage, to connect with a partner and to work on sketches.
ART 119 Modern Dance 2 credits The goal of the course is to develop dance techniques and physical fitness of students. The complex of special exercises based on classic dance choreography and gymnastics allows students to get necessary skills, move naturally and express emotions through the dance. The course develops plasticity, sense of rhythm and coordination.
ART 120 Art of Dancing 2 credits While taking this course, students learn different dance styles in combination with étude. The études help students to master dance techniques, and to acquire elegancy and plasticity. The course develops plasticity, melodiousness, improvisation and creativity. The goal of the course is to express one’s self through the dance.
ART 126 Basics of Fine Arts (Drawing) 2 credits The course is for students who do not have skills in drawing. The complex of gradually complicated exercises and assignments promotes development of a creative personality. Students study the rules of formation of volumetric forms, and the rules of composition and space. Students master the techniques of drawing and do still life and landscape.
ART 127 Basics of Fine Arts (Painting) 2 credits Prerequisite: ART 126 The course is for students who have some skills in drawing. The students get theoretical knowledge on mixture of color, painting composition, still life and landscape. At the end of the semester there is an exhibition of the best student work.
ART 201 Basics of Fine Arts (Portrait) 2 credits Prerequisite: ART 127 The course is for advanced students of the Basics of Fine Arts. Students learn to draw from simple to advanced stages, from drawing separate parts of the face to working from a model. At the end of the semester there is an exhibition of the best student work.
MUS 102 Vocal I 1 credit Prerequisite: musical abilities are desired The course is aimed at revealing and developing the singing talents of students. The skills gained from voice training are essential in all spheres that relate to public speech and develop artistic and vocal talent.
MUS 202 Vocal II 1 credit Prerequisite: MUS 102 This course is designed to develop singing skills of students by strengthening vocal technique. Students perform more difficult pieces of various genres (classic, jazz, pop) that allow them to gain poise in front of an audience.
MUS 103 Piano I 1 credit, Russian Prerequisite: musical abilities are desired The course is for training the elementary skills in playing the piano among students with no preliminary special training. The ear for music, rhythm is sense and musical memory are developed. Here one can get knowledge in music and become acquainted with musical literature. After finishing the course one will be able to read music and set simple accompaniments to favorite tunes.
MUS 203 Piano II 1 credit Prerequisite: MUS 103 In this course students can develop their technical skills and enlarge their repertoires. The lessons are conducted according to individual plans taking into consideration students’ tastes, interests and the levels of preparation. The great choice of music of all epochs and directions is suggested.
MUS 104 Komuz I 1 credit Prerequisite: musical abilities are desired The course is designed for teaching basic skills of playing komuz. The course teaches music notes, playing basic music pieces and accompaniment for songs. Students learn about the history and sources of beginnings of the national instrument and peculiarities of Kyrgyz folklore.
MUS 204 Komuz II 1 credit, Russian Prerequisite: MUS 104 The course is for students with intermediate and advanced skills playing komuz. The pieces are more advanced and individually assigned for students, depending on their playing skills. Students become familiar with not only Kyrgyz national music and Kyrgyz composers.
MUS 101 Guitar I 1 credit Prerequisite: musical abilities are desired The course introduces students to the basics of guitar playing. The course develops potential music skills of students, and fosters music appreciation and understanding. After the completion of the course the students will be able to read music, accompany favorite songs by themselves.
MUS 201 Guitar II 1 credit, Russian Prerequisite: MUS 101 The course is for intermediate and advanced guitar students. Students learn more difficult pieces that require more individual preparation. The students are taught to play in duets and trios. The course promotes aesthetic taste that helps students understand the large world of music.
MUS 107 Vocal-Instrumental Band (VIB) 2 credits Prerequisite: musical abilities are desired VIB is a live performance of popular and original songs accompanied by students themselves. The goals are to teach vocal and instrumental teamwork, stage presence and singing in solo performances.
PHE 101 Bodybuilding 2 credits This course will teach students how to properly perform weight-training exercises. Students will also learn how to create a workout program to meet their individual needs. In the class, students will develop their strength, stamina, flexibility, dexterity and speed.
PHE 102 Basketball 3 credits Prerequisite: PHE 123 The course aims at further developing the main techniques and tactics of individual, group and team actions in attacks and protection, gaining basic theoretical knowledge of the rules of the game, execution of normative requirements of types of training and participation in competitions. During the course the students will develop physical adroitness, speed and stamina, and do general physical training.
PHE 103 Football 3 credits Football is a contact sport. It calls for bravery, determination, courage and the ability to take responsibility, and inculcates teamwork. The main aim of the course is to educate students’ physical and moral qualities, forming the habit of participating in sports and living a healthy life. The course includes a number of friendly games and participation as a team in the Kyrgyz Republic Student Games (Universiada).
PHE 108 Shaping 2 credits This course gives a practical opportunity to rebuild your body through physical exercises. It is aimed at developing an ideal figure, improving well-being, increasing productivity, relieving stress, and losing or gaining weight. The course is for a wide audience, regardless of their physical background.
PHE 110 Corrective Gymnastics and Self-Massage 1 2 credits This course allows one to form a beautiful bearing and to correct the defects of one’s figure. The course is designed for initial study of massage arts. Students obtain practical skills of rejuvenating, restorative massage and self-massage. These skills can be broadly used to relieve stress and increase work abilities.
PHE 111 Yoga–The Way to Physical Perfection 2 credits The course enables students to feel better and gain optimal working ability and also to combat stress with the help of poses or asana and physical exercises. Breathing exercises, elements of relaxation and meditation relieve stress and strain. They also increase strength and flexibility, and stimulate internal reserves.
PHE 112 Swimming 2 credits The course is designed to develop qualities including strength, general and special endurance, flexibility and speed. During the class students learn different methods of swimming: crawl stroke, butterfly and breast-stroke, as well as starts, turns, applied methods of swimming and saving someone who is drowning. The main purposes of the class are to teach basic methods of swimming and to improve the level of students’ physical and functional preparedness.
PHE 113 Aikido 2 credits The main goals of the Aikido class are to develop personal self-confidence, to achieve peace of mind, and to discover and develop the creativity of human being. Aikido is practical lessons. Every student is required to have good behavior and purposefulness and positive thinking. During the studying process, coordination, accuracy, willpower, patience and communication skills are developed.
PHE 114 Table Tennis 2 credits The course aims to develop dexterity, speed and endurance, as well as reflexes and hand-eye coordination. Students also learn the rules and history of the game and rules of refereeing competitions.
PHE 118 Mini-Football 2 credits On the basis of game exercises, students playing mini-football gain power, quickness, adroitness and stamina without even noticing it. Mini-football calls for bravery, determination, and the ability to take responsibility, and inculcates the values of teamwork. The main goal of the course is to educate students’ physical and moral qualities, forming the habit of participating in sports and living a healthy life.
PHE 119 American Football 2 credits This course provides an overview of the rules, strategies and techniques of American football. Students will study these concepts in the classroom and then put them into practice on the field. Students will gain a basic understanding of American football, including its history, philosophy, organization, offense, defense, special teams and scouting. They will also have an opportunity to specialize in the techniques of at least one position each, on offense and defense.
PHE 121 Therapeutic Physical Training 2 credits This course is designed to treat and prevent the spread of different physical ailments with the help of special exercises. The exercises prevent disease complications, strengthen stamina and recover efficiency. During the course, stamina and well-being are improved.
PHE 122 Corrective Gymnastics and Self-Massage 2 2 credits Prerequisite: PHE 110 Gymnastics helps withstand hypodynamia and restores brain and physical working ability. Students master different types of massage: cosmetic, phyto and cryo massage. These skills can be broadly used for stress relief and beauty maintenance.
PHE 123 Basketball for Beginners 2 credits In this course students learn the main techniques and rules of basketball, primary individual and pair tactical actions in attack and protection, master playing skills. The main tasks of the course are health strengthening and all-round physical training, strengthening of bearing, development of speed, strength, endurance, flexibility, dexterity, and building interest in the game.
PHE 124 Volleyball 2 credits In this course students learn the basic techniques, tactics and rules of volleyball. Students improve upon their quickness, endurance and flexibility. Teamwork skills such as communication are also emphasized. |
