FIRST YEAR SEMINAR | FYS AT A GLANCE
Over the course of centuries there has been an ongoing quest, in all branches of the arts and sciences, to discover wisdom through creative, rational, scientific, and spiritual approaches. Many seminal texts explore the questions: What is wisdom? Is there a link between wisdom and reason? What are the characteristics of a wise or just person? Can wisdom be taught?
While it is impossible to answer these questions completely, in First-Year Seminar, students will read core texts that individually and collectively explore the pursuit of wisdom in all its personal, spiritual, political, and aesthetic dimensions. Exploring the role of the wise man or woman in society, students will ponder the mission, philosophy, and fundamental values of a liberal arts education, asking, “What does it mean to participate in an intellectual community grounded in a liberal arts tradition?” Students will also compose academic essays on these topics, responding to complicated issues and ideas with clear, convincing arguments.
The First-Year Seminar Symposia offers films, guest speakers, debates, and other activities that expand the boundaries of this dialogue. First Year Seminar is a six (6) credit student-centered course, and requires close-reading and analytical writing. Students are expected and strongly encouraged to write frequently, read widely and with great attention, and actively engage in vigorous discussion. | SEMINAR |
