Year: Month: July 24, 2008 AUCA’s Social Research Center Explored Islamic Education in Kyrgyzstan BISHKEK, July 24 - AUCA's Social Research Center (SRC) presented the results of the two-month research project entitled "Modernization of Islamic Education Institutions in Kyrgyzstan". This two-month research project that was initiated and financed by the Eurasia Foundation of Central Asia in Bishkek focused on exploring an attitude of the Bishkek city residents toward Islamic education institutions and seeking opinion of Islamic education institutions on possible introduction of secular courses into their curriculum. The study was conducted by AUCA faculty members: Mucaram Toktogulova (Associate Professor of the Department of Cultural Anthropology), Mehrigul Ablezova and Gulzat Botoeva (Acting Associate Professors of the Department of Sociology) and managed by the SRC. The research attempted to identify the general public attitude towards existing Islamic educational institutions in the country. In addition, the research project will explore the potential and inclusion in the curriculum of Islamic institutions of such secular courses as Political Science, Philosophy and others. The results of this two-month research projectwill be used to develop a follow-up action-oriented project by the Eurasia Foundation. In particular, it will focus on curriculum development of the Islamic educational institutions in compliance with the contemporary academic requirements.
