NUMBER OF STUDENTS IN A CLASS

The minimum number of students per class differs depending on the type of course. This is meant to ensure the effective use of the University’s classroom space, while at the same time not adversely affecting the quality of instruction. The minimums are:

  • 15 students for general education courses
  • 12 students for required courses within programs
  • 10 students for language courses

In order to leave room in a class for the “Add/Drop” period, the number of registered students in a course will be 75-80% of the minimum.

The number of students auditing a course is not taken into account when calculating the number of students in that course.

Exceptions to the minimum course sizes may be made when there small numbers of upper-division students required to complete required major courses.
