Alessandra Russo

Abstract: During the seminar, Alessandra presented the basic concepts upon which she is building her PhD research project titled “Interdependence and Transition: Regionalism in a Post-Unitary System”. The research aims at analyzing the structure of Post-Soviet security associative system and explaining why it is characterized by overlapping memberships and agendas, the coexistence of multiple “barycenters”, variable geometries, and multiple speeds. She explained the rationale of her fieldwork (both in Tbilisi and Bishkek) and how it serves the purpose of understanding foreign policy behaviors as an observable proxy for relational processes. In fact, foreign policy might be interpreted accordingly: both as a process that organizes the international environment, including the regional space where a certain country is located, and as a process of making of the self through othering, namely through courses of “regional association” and “regional disassociation”.

Bio: Alessandra is a Ph. D. candidate in Politics, Human rights and Sustainability at the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, Pisa, Italy. She holds MA degree in International relations and European studies from the University of Florence.
