New Generation Academy Students Start Giving Back

New Generation Academy Students Start Giving Back

January 13, 2014

NGA Students raised the money themselves.

The students initiated the event and raised funds from their own personal savings as much as possible. AUCA also supported the initiative, matching the student’s funds to help buy presents and food. AUCA’s PR Director Dinara Orozbaeva traveled to Osh with the students to participate in the event. “It was amazing to see the joy that the NGA students brought to the children. There are so few people who spend time with these kids, so it was really special for our students to dedicate part of their holiday to these kids.”

Boorukerlik not a random choice.

The center was chosen by the students because they felt that too many of the social services available to the poor are only available in Bishkek, and that the social safety net in the south is much weaker. Boorukerlik currently serves 32 abandoned children and 32 elderly homeless. One of the NGA students from Osh contacted the center and arranged for the visit and event.

Only the needy understand the needy

The well-fed don't understand the hungry, so says an old proverb.  NGA was established for talented youth from low-income families, and all of the students studying there have had to overcome significant obstacles just to survive. The students understand the difficulty that these people are facing, and even though they have only just been given the opportunity to be AUCA students, they are already starting to give back.

During the New Year the most important feeling is hope, and the students were able to convey this feeling to the people at Boorukerlik. The students know that not every child in this center will grow up and have the same opportunity that they currently have, but they are dedicated to pursuing an education that will allow them to spread similar opportunities further. The event in Boorukerlik was just the first step in a resolution that began in fall 2013.

Dinara Orozbaeva, AUCA PR Director

-        In 2013 AUCA was more involved in giving back to the community than ever before. We donated hundreds of books to local libraries, over 60 computers to schools and educational centers, and ran several pro-bono education events for youth, retired military, and adult learners. Next year we will continue to support such initiatives, including the great work that our NGA students have done at Boorukerlik. We hope that we can work more closely with the center in the future and provide the people there with some resources that can make their lives better.

Umutkan Jusupova, the Head of Boorukerlik.

-        We were able to celebrate a great holiday today thanks to AUCA students and staff. I’m very thankful to the students for their diligence, initiative, and because they are also in need of funds, but they decided to give instead.
