New Campus Presentation

New Campus Presentation

April 16, 2014

On April 15, architect Henry Myerberg gave a presentation for AUCA faculty and staff regarding the ongoing construction of AUCA's new campus.

Mr. Myerberg discussed the projected appearance of the entire new facility and how physical spaces can engage students in the learning process.

"New Campus builds community and empowers individuals," Mr. Myerberg said during the presentation.

The new AUCA campus building, slated to be completed within a year, is a 17,000 square meter mixed use facility combining academic, administrative, dining, research, laboratory, recreational, and meeting functions. The design of the New Campus draws inspiration from the liberal arts colleges of America while integrating the colors, patterns, and hospitality of Kyrgyz nomadic culture. Framed between the architecture and mountains, the welcoming entry quad recalls both the historic campus of the University of Virginia and the tree lined parks of Bishkek.

Educators today promote the idea that the best learning happens outside the classroom, and the new AUCA building is planned around this understanding of education. Adjacent to classrooms, hallways open onto study and refreshment lounges that invite the collaborative continuation of classroom sessions. At the same time, students and faculty have access to solitary and quiet study carrels in the library stacks or within nooks and crannies on to be found on every level.
