JMC students took part in a research project of the International Organization for Migration

May 12, 2016

Students of the Journalism and Mass Communications department (JMC) within their Mass Media Research Methods course, led by Dr. Umetbaeva, took part in a research project of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) on the topic of environmental migration in Kyrgyzstan, aiming to further our knowledge of the complex interactions between environmental factors and human mobility in the context of climate change.

They conducted semi-structured interviews with inhabitants of Bishkek on their perceptions of internal rural-urban migration, the environmental problems the city is facing, and of environmental migrants. Moreover, they analyzed media representations of environmental migration in the international media outlets. Antoine Chandonnet, the principal investigator of the project, handed in certificates to the students for successful completion of their research assignments. IOM is very grateful to participating AUCA students, as the information collected during the semi-structured interviews will contribute to increase our understanding of environment-migration interactions in order to tackle the negative consequences of climate change on human mobility in Kyrgyzstan.
