Women and the Arts

February 22, 2017

Fatima Airan, the sophomore student in economics, is the head of Women and the Arts Club at AUCA. She shared the main objective and functions of this club:

“I was always interested in studying women artists, philosophers, astronauts, writers, poets... and women who have contributed positive changes in humans’ lives, women without whom civilization and human’s progress throughout history would have been uncompleted. At school, I was always supplied with resources either written by men or discovered by them, with Marie Curie being an exception. Therefore, one of my life’s goals became searching for the possible ways to introduce these women in my community, so people would believe in women’s abilities and provide them with the possible chances so they can grow.

I believe that university is the place where every student starts building her/him self’s future. AUCA, besides providing me with an excellent education, helps me to take the fundamental steps for building my social life. Women and the Arts Club is an official club at American University of Central Asia which started its activities in December 2015. This Club intends to serve two following proposes. Firstly, it intends to be a place where we can provide each other with support and attention to the situation we deal with women. Secondly, we want people to understand what feminism is and how to solve the stereotypes and misunderstanding about feminism in general. Therefore, this club wants people to realize the problems women face and together find the solution.

We celebrated the International day of Girls through an open mic night on 11th October 2016. In addition, we have made three videos about gender equality and feminism, in which our members discuss the obstacles women face, the stereotypes about feminism, and they encourage everyone to stand with women, to make sure that they are independent, strong and confident. We are planning to celebrate the international women’s day, eight of March, by holding an art competition, debating about feminism, playing a movie, and presenting the researches that our club members have done.

I believe that we are living once and we are studying at AUCA once for four years. Studying hard and being engaged in activities shape who we are going to be in the future."
